the rise and fall

i guess, at times i walk on the waters,
the ebb, a reminder of my narrow chin.
i have a thing for kissing life.
and i do it precisely well.
i kiss and drink the sweetness,
the stars and the sound of the bells.
i metamorph into a syllabus of a veritable smirk.

dreams hold my mouth and put me back to sleep until i am awake like colours,
vibrant and throbbing a dark spot.

at times, i become seasons,
my body, a criss-cross of lanterns.
it’s small and beautiful.
And that’s how i inhale smoke,
my voice tore away like sunsets falling into the rivers.
streams of gushing ripples on my cheeks.

there was a time once,
when poetry was all Mediterranean Sea to me,
with potholes and hammers,
squirming noises of silence.

The semesters of trimmed life makes me a moon,
a person in illusion,
a mirage rising inside the languid skin.

  1. Really love this, especially the subtle references to education through syllabus and semesters. And, I am a sucker for all things tide related so the ebbing sticks with me. As usual, beautiful imagery capturing the ebb and flow of emotions, the nature of poetry and your relation to it and how we sometimes are that moon, looking down on our lives, tugging on seas of thoughts.

      1. Your random is always wonderful and you are most welcome. Your words always make sense to me and yes, sometimes we are nothing. I forgot to mention, I love your comparison of yourself to seasons – aren’t we all!!

  3. The poetry is beautiful, but still i felt something exquisite which I’m guessing is you. And i disagree w the fact, that the moon only reflects, for the moon, that oh adorns my night sky, is oh just so special, only to witness all my poetry revolving all around her, for oh she’s the only light, through which, one would read, what i might have to say. If you do get the deeper meaning hidden in this, do smile for me. 🙂

  4. Oh, how I have missed reading your words! I am particularly fond of this piece because of the illuminating imagery. I felt the piece move like an ebbing wave crashing on shore. Your metaphors were very memorable and you just brought joy to me today. Thanks for sharing!! ♥️

  5. “dreams hold my mouth and put me back to sleep until i am awake like colours,
vibrant and throbbing a dark spot.”..Gives me the surreal feeling of waking up from an unexplained dream and still suspended between the dreaming and awake state.
    Loved reading it, Devika.
