Sullen Darkness

From a dark hole, no light can be seen.
Darkness eats darkness, to produce more of it.
Sustenance in the trunk of tree
or sustenance in the thunderstorms
will make your body and mind a living zombie
Caricatures shall be burned
smokes, ashes and grave.
Floating fingers, aerial flaps of thigh
hunting red eyes, covetous palm
For jealousy is a disease
In the blues of water,
poke your dizzy reflection— what do you see?
Take a conscious step further,
graphite earthworms shall stick to your sole,
paralysis of mind, paralysis of the heart,
Sickness will eat you like a fire spread
Dead trees also cool down, after the smoke is extinguished.

  1. Jealousy is a beast that consumes light from within leaving darkness in its wake with only darkness for sustenance. Darkness begets darkness but in this case, it also begets beautiful poetry. These are my favorite lines:

    Take a conscious step further,
graphite earthworms shall stick to your sole,
paralysis of mind, paralysis of the heart,
Sickness will eat you like a fire spread

My interpretation of these lines may not align with your intended purpose, however, I see the speaker, telling someone to take that conscious step (write) as those cursive lines (graphite earthworms) stick to the sole (soul) because the mind and heart are paralysed from that darkness and the sickness (jealousy) will consume all in its path, like a wild spreading fire. Maybe it’s the poet speaking internally. Perhaps it’s a warning to any of us who have allowed jealousy to move in to our minds.

Your last line may be misinterpreted as hope but I think it, too, is a warning, reminding us that dead trees may cool once the fire is extinguished, however, the trees are still dead.

I really enjoy digging into your words, Devika as they always take me on new journeys. Beautiful poetry, my friend.

    1. So you nailed it once agian, and one shouldn’t doubt your wisdom as I always say. The begining was intense and later on I do talk about taking that conscious step. At this stage I am thrilled to see your perception and that is simply mind blowing. Your theories have hit the zone impeccably.
Especially, the lats line where I thought a reader might be confused about the ray of hope, you still managed to understand the truth behind hope and the hidden metaphor which once agiain is brilliant as the trees are eventually dead.

I feel more than speechless as to how you have unveiled each of my words beauty. You understand my work like an honest writer, never failing to give honest opinions.
Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart, Alex!

      1. I think we owe to to those we read to be honest about how their work moves us. Some poetry we understand fully while other pieces take us on different paths but they are our paths. I am happy to have been able to analyse with precision, what you folded within your words. I am also happy to be able to read such beautiful poetry.

You are most welcome, Devika 🙂
